Thanks for any help.

Try going to evinrude.com and comparing the part numbers between the two models.
Unless someone has a definitive reply.?;)

The 73 trim units was 172670 and fit from 65 thru 135 hp. In 74 the 172509 would fit from 70 thru 135. Agree, it should fit.

If you get a bargain unit for a pre-'78 motor, you've hit the lottery!

I don't think the 3 cyl unit uses the same plate that bolts to the motor's mid-section as the V4's use. However, I'd still grab the unit if you can get it. Those things go for $400+ on ebay. I know because I tried for years to find one for my '73 85. Never did succeed.

Re: PT&T for 1974 135HP Evinrude

I had been searching the site and found this
Evinrude TILT unit.jpg

I can blow it up on my computer and below Kit 172859 it does say For 73-78 65-75HP 20" shaft and 74-77 V-4 Models 20" shaft.

So if the guy is telling me the right year I should be set. I'm supposed to meet him on Friday to take a look.

For future searches, the unit will also fit 1973 v-4's.

As EZ said, good ones are like gold.

Let us know how you make out.

Just an fyi...

The port cylinder is the trim cylinder (up only) and the starboard cylinder is the tilt cylinder(up and down).

I mention this beacause if your bench testing, the trim cyinder only pushes upward a small amount(then moves freely) and uses the tilt cylinder to pull it downward to full trim down position. I've had folks panic when tested, that the trim side seems to be flapping in the breeze.

Thanks for the info and the year(typo by me) dazk14. I'm flying blind on this - I have never been up close to a PTT, our friends don't boat. Everything i've learned is on iboats :)

The guy was supposed to send pics, but hasn't yet. I'm hoping the pump is a Prestolite. I've read they are the better of the two.

Though these old trim systems were not as neat looking as today's trim systems, they worked fine. They're had to find parts for anymore. Some of these early units used a 3-position switch which mounted on the dash. You may be able to convert the handle on your trim box, to the one which has the switch in the handle-much handier..these handles came out in 1978 and they may retrofit to your box.

Re: PT&T for 1974 135HP Evinrude

So I went to look at this today. Its not what I had expected to see. They guy has stripped down the motor, but all the parts are there, I think.

Motor ID leg plate shows 70473M a 1974 70HP, Head plug shows 70EL78C a 1978 70HP.

Here are pics of what I found PHTO0632.jpg PHTO0631.jpg PHTO0633.jpg

I was expecting to see something like this Evinrude Power tilt Trin 1974.jpg

There was a # HYB6003 (I think, need new bifocals) on the pump casing where it mounts to the stern bracket.

This doesn't look like a PTT that would fit my 135 or is it

Looks like the one on my 75 115 so that should be it. There was a tilt only and a tilt and trim. If you only have one cylinder it is the tilt only.

Uh oh, I think that's a power tilt only model. They had those back then. It was only good for tilting the motor out of the water. It's not strong enough to hold the motor under power for trim. Still could be handy but I wouldn't pay much for it. I ran into one of these also when trying to find TnT for mine.

What would paying too much be in real dollars. He is listing the whole package at $300, powerhead middle cyl is bad, power pack is gone, has everthing else including controls. I was looking at parting it out. Keeping the tilt and a few other parts.

The tilt would be handy for beaching and loading. I'm not getting any younger, lifting my Merc 500 is already a PITA.

Any info / guesses on the motor / pump. Its not like any i have seen. Are their parts available?

$300 for a dead '70s is too much. That $300 would be better put towards a correct OEM unit or a CMC. That's just me though. I don't know about parts availability.

I would have no interest paying $300 for a tilt only mechanism. You want the type which will move the engine when it is under power. Keep looking for the unit in your last picture, the true tilt/trim type....

Thanks everyone for the valued input.

I did not buy it and will continue the quest for the PTT.

Sorry I'm a little late responding, Saturday 9.5 hours at a kids swim meet, guests on Sunday and Ice storm and Snow has now taken out the internet, phone and power at home. Got the power back, thankfully.

You just made my day. i picked up complete unit for $120 that had a leaking rubber hose on the upper starboard side. I benched tested it and thought the port side cylinder was bad. So I set it asside.

I was hoping it would work on 84 60hp twin cyclinder (small gearcase) I currently using a cmc pt-130 setback trim unit.

64osby I might have something you need
