I have a '54 25 hp RDE16 Johnson Electric Start Outboard and am eying a '55 25 hp RD17 Johnson Outboard. I'm curious about parts compatibility, particularly the starter bracket, flywheel setup, and lower unit. The biggest noticeable difference I can tell from pictures is that the '55 had the addition of the two lower shaft supports on the side. The cowling appears to be better sealed on the '55 and has a middle hinge to flip from back to front as opposed to the bolted clam-shell halves on the '54.

Has anyone attempted to transplant the starter setup across these two yr model outboards? If so, what items should I look out for?
Thanks...

The '55 was a major redesign over the '54. There are probably more parts that won't fit than those that will fit. As for the starter bracket----nope.
