First time poster so be gentle. I have a 69 25hp Johnson on my flat bottom. i have gone through and replace the seal and o ring on the shift linkage going into the gear case and replaced both of the washers on the oil drain and fill holes. totally cleaned and resealed the gearcase where it joins the lower unit. anyways i have oil leaking out of a little hole above the gearcase in the area of the lower unit that the shift linkage is in but below the seal for it. can anyone tell me what this is. the gc oil had water in it before i changed it and didnt have any after I ran it for a short while afterwards. Could this just be unburnt exhaust oil ?

Yup, that's what that hole does - drain water and exhaust residue from the housing. Perfectly normal. Looks like yours is draining great. Sometimes they get sealed off and don't drain properly.

Just for peice of mind I would check the oil after it ran for awhile, that sure does loom like lower oil with water in it.

After you get a little time on it just crack the bottom drain plug after it has sat for a couple hours and see if water comes out.

I had the same motor and it did the same thing, now worries its probably just the exhaust.Definetley one of the toughest motors out there

Exhaust housing drainage. Absolutely normal and the question pops up here very often.

Yea, sometimes it comes out black. I guess it depends on what kind of oil you're running. You should take a spray nozzle to those drain hole regularly and make sure they stay clear, because if they plug up and keep water in, they'll freeze up and swell and you'll likely get a cracked lower unit.
