Re: Key Switch wiring

There should be 12 volts present constantly at the "B" terminal of the ignition switch.

THere should be 12 volts at the "S" terminal of the ignition switch ONLY when the key is turned to the START position. The wire attached to that "S" terminal should lead to the 3/8" nut of the starter solenoid that energizes the solenoid.

THe other 3/8" nut of the starter solenoid should lead to a powerhead ground.

Is your switch wired in this manner?

Re: Key Switch wiring

The ignition switch should be part number 508180.

It would have six (6) screw type terminal connectors. The terminals would be marked:

M = Black ground wire (Reg terminal)
M = Black/Yellow kill wire (Raised tower type terminal)
C = Usually Purple/White wire (Choke/Primer solenoid)
A = All purple wires (12v to anything when key is ON)
S = Usually white wire (Starter solenoid)
B = Usually red (Constant battery voltage)

Possibly you blew the 20 ampere power fuse? This fuse exists inline in one of the smaller RED wires that leads from the starter solenoid.

Re: Key Switch wiring

Did you test the neutral start switch and wiring inside the control box?

Did you check for voltage at the yellow wire on the starter solenoid?

You may not have had a key switch problem at all.

Re: Key Switch wiring

Yeah I had to change it the key broke off inside

then check for voltage at the S terminal - yellow or yellow/red wire - and check for voltage at the solenoid terminal when turned to START.

Re: Key Switch wiring

Her is what it does:
With key OFF test light lights up on the
M=ground
C=choke
M=kill switch(raised terminal)
A=accesories
with key ON test light comes on the
M=ground(test light is really dim though)
M=kill switch(raised terminal)
C=choke(test light goes out when I push key in)
Now when I turn the key all the way as to turn the motor over:
choke,light goes out when I push the key in,and kill switch still has power.
But I never get anything to the S=starter terminal.What is goin on here.Maybe I should put old switch back and try it again to see if faulty switch?

Re: Key Switch wiring

With the key OFF and voltage going to various points as you mentioned above, It is quite possible that you've already blown both powerpacks and other circuits.

Disconnect the battery NOW and leave it that way until you get that ignition switch wired properly.
