Johnson 8.0 sailmaster

Hi, I just bought a 8.0 sailmaster at a yard sale and I'm not sure of the year the model #J8SRLETB could you tell me the year from this number it also has a thin power cable coming off it wiht pos, neg leads what would these be for,I don't see a starter motor! Thanks Skip

The cable with positive and negative leads is for battery charging.

The Sailmaster ( like my Evinrude Yachtwin) has a stator coil and rectifier fitted for battery charging as standard equipment.

If you connect it make sure you do not get + and - the wrong way round or you will blow the rectifier in an instant.

If you are not going to use it for battery charging either insulate the connectors or disconnect the lead at the terminal strip.

Pretty useless for battery charging anyway because you only get much out of it at highish revs ... You don't often run at high revs and you don't normally run for long enough either!
Mine is connected up but the real battery charging is from a solar panel!
