I am trying to replace the water pump and can't seem to understand the trick in dropping/separating the lower unit from the motor. After I removed the 4 LU bolts the units separate but just hangs there .........must have some type of a retainer clip holding them together.

Appreviate any advice................Thanks, Seaclor

You need to disconnect the shift rod. Peek inside the gap and you'll see the connection.

I do believe on that mtr you take off the water pick up screens and you will find a connector under them. A couple of wrenches will seperate them, remove the little plastic keepers on the shift rod and remove g/c.

How do you remove the little plastic keepers?

It's only one keeper that has a split in it. You can pry it open, gently, with a thin blade, then slip it off.

Do not loose that little critter!!!

when loosening the nuts on the shift linkage just turn the top nut,if the bottom shaft turns it will adjust the shift linkage out of synk.

There is no adjustment on the lower shift rod. All you have to do is make sure it is bottomed out in the shifter yoke upon reassembly.
