just wondering if it is possible to convert this motor (1988 28 hp johnson) to a short shaft and what all i need to do so. i know that this model is a combination of the 25 hp and 30 hp put together. right now it is long shaft and i need it to be a short shaft. Can anyone help me out with this?

Re: 28 hp johnson long shaft to short shaft

Normally it is a question of discarding the 5" extension, shortening the water tube and fitting the standard drive shaft in place of the long one and likewise the shift rod.

However only a long shaft version of the 28 is listed. So it seems no standard shft components

The 1988 25 and 30 hp models appear to have different gearcases so drive-shafts are probably not interchangeable with the 28 and the shift mechanism is entirely different.

If this is to be done you will have to investigate the compatibility with other models. Earlier versions of the 25 or 30 if they exist perhaps.

good luck!
