2002 Johnson Starving for fuel

I have a 2002 90hp Johnson outboard, with the Optical Ignition System. Serial #: 04986178, Model #: J90VLSNF

Motor turns over real well, spark is good. Take the Air box off and spray fuel into the cylinders and it fires and sounds good for about 5 seconds then shuts off. I am figuring it is some sort of a fuel starvation problem, bad lift pump. Boat never really sat for long periods of time, so I dont think Injectors are clogged or anything along those lines. Primer Bulb gets hard and stays hard, you can see fuel going in when you pump the bulb.

Thanks,
Mike

If you have spark and you have fuel, the next thing is do a compression test. (Possible blown head gasket)

Ok, so how is the fuel system pressurized, it has a schrader valve on it, with a plastic red arrow behind it, does that have to be any certain way? When you pump the bulb fuel/oil mixture dumps out of the lower carbs, but where it goes into the fuel rail is below the top carbs, wondering if it has something to do with pressure, if so how many psi do you put into the valve?

1. The plastic red arrow needs to be folded back, parallel to the solenoid body for "normal" starting.

2. The primer bulb pressuizes the fuel system. Make sure it is not installed backwards. The arrow, on the bulb, goes toward the engine.

Use this starting procedure:

1. Prime bulb.

2. Turn key to ON-NOT START.

3. Push key in and count to eight.

4. Release key.

5. Turn to start.

You may have to "bump" the key in a few times to keep it running.

The red arrow on the primer has to be parallel with the the solenoid for normal operation. To use the primer, pump bulb till hard ,then turn key to start position pushing it IN and that opens up primer when cranking. Fuel pump is feeding fuel through primer whenever key is pushed in. If by pushing the key in after mtr starts and it keeps running you are by passing the carbs and could have some carb probs. By the way, you have no injectors on this mtr. It has carbs if the model # is correct.
