Hey everyone. I'm new to the boating world, so please excuse my ignorance. I bought a 16 ft aluminum boat with '83 25 hp Evinrude pull start outboard. The guy gave me an American Bosch Electric starter but I'm having difficulty wiring it up. How can you tell in the solonoid is any good? How do you wire from the battery to the solonoid/starter including a push button start? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well your solenoid should have 4 posts 2 large and 2 small the 2 large will be the battery connection and the starter connection then the other 2 will be the action ignition wire coming from, in your case, the button. The other small post should be for the safety cut out switch.

To test the solenoid hooke one side up to the battery and wire the button to the small post then use a test light and if you push the button and the other post lights up the test light then you know the solenoid is good.

If you have a different solenoid than the one described then please disregard this and explain what it looks like.

Sorry Mables, but found it a little bit confusing,
The solenoid has 2 Big studs and 2 small.
On the one big stud:
Battery cable IN, Red cable from rectifier (if you have charging).
Lead to starter button.(If engine has a safety switch on the shift lever stb side of engine, route it through the switch)
Second big stud:
Cable to starter.
One small stud:
Ground.
The other small stud:
From starter button/ign switch.
To test:
B+ on one small stud - negative on the other.
Ohm between the two big ones = 0 Ohm (short)
Relay should make a loud 'click'.

Thank you for the info. I've attached a pic of the starter. On the diagram what is between the #s 4 + 5?

Haffiman: Thank you for the info. Again excuse my ignorance, when testing the solonoid does it matter which little post the + or - from the battery attaches to? If it does not click does that mean the solonoid is bad?

It does technically not matter which of the big or small studs you attach the wires as long as you in principle follow the instructions above.
The pic if you use remote and key-switch, my 'verbal' if you just hook up a start button. In all original OMC remotes the 'no start in gear' switch is inside the remote.

Thank you for your help. The starter worked just as planned. Unsure of the size of the gauge wire I should use from the battery to the starter and from the push button to the starter. Any suggestions???? Thank you again!

Well, I used 15' of 4 gauge (jumper cable) for my battery cable on my 30hp. So I think it should work fine for you. Thinner stuff you have around the house should be fine for your push button.

A 4-5 AWG cable should do bot as battery cables up to 6 ft and between solenoid and starter, but solder the terminals.
As for start button and solenoid ground, anything below 14 AWG if button is engine mounted.
