I have a 1972 hp rude that has problems running. When it does run it runs rough. When starting sometimes the flywheel will reverse and engine will run backwards for a bit. I pulled the flywheel and when inspecting the coil it looked fine (green coated one) , but the distributer cap is burnt in two small spots on the inside wall and it smells burnt. Is this culprit to the engine not running well? . -M

The distributor cap probably is the culprit. The green stator coils have nothing to do with anything but charging the battery. There is supposed to be a silver wire spring "reverse cut-out ring" around the shaft to keep it from running backwards. It should be lubricated very sparingly with some EP grease to keep it from wearing. Metal dust from a dry, worn cut-out ring will coat the inside of the distributor cap, causing arcing, which causes burning and destruction of the cap.

EDIT: The wires screw into the cap. Don't just pull them out or you will be looking for some new wires too.
