I'm now searching for either a lower unit for my 1963 Big Twin 40 or a running motor for which mine could be a parts motor. Is there a compatibility list somewhere for which Johnson and Evinrude motors are fully or partly interchangeable?

Thanks!

1960 through 1970 40hp will fit as a complete unit. But from about 1968-ish up, the water tubes were different, so you have to do tubes too. Actually, the 1958-59 35hp will fit too. But only the "Super Quiet" '58 models.

Are you talking lower unit specifically? If so, what about the rest of the motor? I'm hitting Craigslist this morning. So far I have found these motors that the sellers claim to be running:

1962(?) Big Twin 40 model 40352-D
1964 40hp Big Twin
1960 Johnson Super Seahorse 40 RDS 22
40 hp Johnson - mid 60s?

Thanks!

Just wanted to ask this question again about broader compatibility of parts (beyond the lower units) on 1960s Johnson and Evinrude 40 hp motors. Maybe it's too complicated to answer easily. I posted a few motors I'm checking on in the previous post.

Thanks!

There were continual changes year by year. A couple of examples are the crankshaft and flywheel, changed in 1962. Carburetor and choke, changed in 1964. Internal parts changed several times. Wiring harness changed. Fuel pump changed. And then of course there were the electric shifts.

So, you see, there is no correct blanket statement that applies.

Got it. Can a '63 carb/choke go on a '64 and vice versa?

It is complicated. Some parts interchange throughout, some almost do, and some don't at all. Your best bet is to look at the parts lists and diagrams and try to piece it together that way.

All of the parts lists are here: http://www.*****************/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php

1968 and newer here: http://shop2.evinrude.com

Hi, Im trying to find information about the controls (throttle/gears) would anyone here know what model year / part no that would fit a big twin 40 hp from the 60:s (1963- 1965?). Thanks

Calle - Please start a new thread. This one is over 8 years old and your post is off topic. The subject is lower unit, not controls.
