Hi.
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a question. My friend has a 1968 evinrude sportwin. If i remove the 6 screws holding on the lower gearcase, can i jst drop the case without having linkages, bearings, and shafts to worry about? The reason i ask is that the screw on the port side, farthest from the prop is snapped off. if i can remove the housing, i can grab the screw? We started to try an extractor, but my friend (no kidding) punched and drilled off center. any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

After the gearcase drops down a bit, you can get in there and remove a bolt from the shift rod connector. Then it will come on down and away.

Just to confirm... I'm talking about the lower case that splits the propshaft. the part with the skeg plate.

As F_R said, the best way would be to remove the lower unit, and then you can turn it upside down and remove the skeg to to your repairs.
