I have recently purchased a 1999 Triton Tr18 with a 1999 Johnson 150, Upon carrying it to the lake today I discovered that after in the wter it develops somewhat of a rough idle and seems to be as though the carbs are loading up.

I am new to the outboard engine and really don,t know where to start or if I should just carry it to someone to have it looked at but I am hoping that it is something simple that I can take care of myself.
By the way the VRO is still hooked up.

One other problem that I am having is that the steering is extremely difficult to turn whether sitting on the trailer in the driveway or in the water. Any suggestions would be helpful.

It has dual cable steering and something that I thought about that may be the problem is that a jack plate was installed on the boat and the cables were not replaced, would this make the cables to short and in turn place the steering in a bind??

Thanks in advance for the help!

Model number?

It helps that you are a practical thinker , yeh the jackplate could very well be binding the steering, disconnect the coupling at the outboard and see if the engine swivels freely on its bracket without the cable. Likely needs a longer cable. Have a look on ebay.

If the engine is new to you and the service history unknown you need to go through all the maintenance items.
Use an impact screwdriver, remove the lower drain screw and inspect the gear oil. Use new seals after changing oil.

Rebuild all carbs with carb kits.

You'l need to order the carb kits, gear oil, drain screw seals and water pump impellor, iBoats sells all the parts, use your model number ( which you didn't post)
and order the factory service manual. Not the owner manual.

Should cost you less than $200 total.

Or take it in the shop and pay over $1000.
Thats why I prefer DIY.:)
