evinrude 55 hp wont idle in water

hello all.........i have a mid 80"s model 55hp evinrude.the boat runs great with a set of ears but when i put the boat in the water it wont stay running.it will run for 2 to 5 seconds and die.i have already run a compression check on both cylinders and have 125 on the top and 122 on the bottom.what could cause this and what do i need to do to fix it? thanks for your help...

Is the idle speed set at the proper RPM? When running on a hose there is no back pressure on the exhaust system, when you put it in the water there is backpressure on the exhaust system.
You might want to check spark and make sure it is running on all cylinders.

it has spark on both cylinders.i am pretty sure idle is right.how do i adjust it and where is the idle adjustment on it? thanks for your help.

Do a link & sync according to your manual. Remember final adjustments must be done in the water and the motor in gear.
