I'm thinking about buying a 1987 175 HP Johnson outboard, the guy said it runs great and thinks it only has about 200 hours on it.

I took a compreesion test and found from 90 to 96 Lbs per cylinder, I know some motor in this time period had a "Low Compression" engine design.

What should the compression be for this engine,& if this is low what type of problems would I have?

Model # J175TLCUA
Serial # 7500998

Thanks

There is no spec for psi compression. There are too many variables to set a number.

Compression span, however, is specified at 10-15% and veteran JohnnyRude wrenches generally agree that if you have a 10% or less span the psi is not important.

Your readings are typical of a strong, healthy JohnnyRude V6.
