lower unit romoval

i have a 1977 9.9 johnson and i need to replace the main shaft seals.. i removed the six bolts off the lower end but something is still hanging up maybe the shift linkage?? i cant figure it out. need help!!!

I am basing this answer on my engine which is a 1983 35hp....on the lower end do you have 2 black intake screens..if so take them off and the shift rod linkage should be seen in there....undue the the connector and the unit should drop off....

hope this is correct for the 77 also...

Use this link and plug in your make, year and model. Then look at the diagrams and part listings for the shift linkage.

Best thing to have is an OEM manual.

The shift rod connector is visible once you drop the gearcase down 1/2 ". Reach into the separation with a screwdriver and remove the lower screw.

it would be an opportune time to service your water pump as well
