I have an old 2 stroke (FD20C) a late 50's 20 horse Johnson. The handel broke just inside of were the tiller mounts to it. I was able to buy a new handel. The manuals I have access to do not show how to break down the unit to remove and replace the handel. Can't tell if it's downward from the power head or upward from the shaft ect. How do you R&R the handel?

Re: Replacing handel on 20hp Johnson

It is called a steering bracket.

There are lower rubber motor mounts in the clamshell at the bottom of the steering swivel. Remove the clamshells and undo the mounts.

There are 3 upper rubber rubber mounts, one on each side and one in front/center. Remove the acorn nuts from the side ones and loosen the nut on the front one several turns.

Remove the vertical throttle shaft

Remove the incoming gas line.

Pull the bottom of the motor rearward, rocking the whole thing back and upward, out and away from the steering bracket.
