I have a 1985 E40ELCO 40hp evinrude motor with a vro. It would run at start up but die after the carb bowls emptied. You could keep it running by pressing the fuel line bulb so I figured the fuel pump went bad. My local boat mechanic said a new VRO is $500 and they don't make rebuild kits for them. I don't mind mixing gas so he sold me a replacement fuel only pump

I went home to install it but there are no bolt holes or pressure pulse port on my model.
I have two questions.
1. Is there another fuel only pump for an E40ELCO and how is it installed?
2. Could there be another reason why my original VRO fuel pump wouldn't be pumping gas other than it being bad? (I already put in new fuel lines.)

Re: 1985 e40elco vro fuel pump problems

Appears that you have been sold the incorrect pump.

The unit you listed is for motors without a VRO, not meant as a replacement for a VRO system with the idea of going to a premixed oil\gas setup. There is a specific pump needed when converting to a pre mix gas\oil setup.

There are rebuild kits for VRO pumps but I've not had good luck with them myself.

If your like me and on a budget try finding a used VRO some place like Ebay. If your worried that the oiler on a used VRO is suspect you can bypass that portion of the unit and go with mixed gas.

Hope this helps

Thanks I found more info in this thread.

I'm bought this fuel pump

It seems to be cheaper than a rebuild kit or buyin a used vro off of ebay.

It should be in next week and I will update the status of both threads on whether it works or not.
