I am aswering a question on a UK forum (about float adjustment) but the supplementary question asked is:
"What is the function of the 'bladder' (little orange condom within a housing in the float chamber that seems to connect to a fuel line the runs to a connection on the block)."

So what is that bladder?

Is that right about the hose?
Shouldn't the integral fuel tank be connected to the bladder?

Isn't the hose from the "block" the pulse line for the fuel pump?

We are talking about 4hp circa 2000, exact year not known at present.

It is a Jjohnson we are talking about.

For the sake of my question lets say it is a year 2000 model with model number J4RSSM

The diagram of the carb shows a "bladder" #42 What's it for?

There is a hose on the nipple #9 where should the other end go ?

Did you ever find out what that orange bladder does?

I think this little orange bladder acts as some kind fuel pump. I've also seen it on some Eskas and Tecumshe carbs. But I'm getting so damn old I can't remember exactly what it does. Keep us posted if you find out.

looks to me like an in line fuel filter. alot of honda small engines used them in line from the fuel tank.

I did come to the conclusion that it is a fuel pump. ( It's definitely not a filter)

There is a vacuum pulse connection to the inside of it via the fitting you see uncrewed.

The fixed connection is where the fuel hose from the integral tank fits and the lever sticking out bottom left operares the fuel valve to turn the fuel on and off,

Also in there ... the parts diagrams shows them (#31 in the link above) ... are a couple of one way valves, as you expect for a pump. Fuel is pumped up through the hole facing us (that's one of the one way valves you can see) to the top part of the carb body and the float valve.

The diagram in the link also show a connection (#33) on the top half of the carb body for a feed from a "normal" type of fuel pump and a remote tank.
