Just notice that the lower end of motor where whale tail is attached is cracked and some pieces of metal are gone. Is this repairable? Whale tail is still on but may have been installed incorrectly....only reason I can think of that would cause this. Any advise???

No I don't, put boat back in storage. The metal area that the whale tail is attached to on the lower end cracked around 2 of the screws. A piece of the metal is missing as well. Don't know if that helps or not. It's the small metal ledge above the prop.

Got it. That plate is called the anti cavitation plate. It is NOT a structural part of the lower unit as far as the internal components go.

It's not a big deal. However, those devices can put a lot of stress on those plates. Especially if the engine is set too deep on the transom.

Remove the "fin" and fill the holes/cracks with Marine Tex and repaint-done.

yes its fixable.as a matter of fact any good fab/welder should be able to fix you up.ive seen my buddy who owns a prop repair business replace huge chunks of cav plates to look like new.
