New to the forum and trying to breath new life into a 1972 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin - was getting close and pull cord snapped. Have the replacement cord attached - how do I get the recoil to reset ? Thanks

At this point the spring is probably unwound so you need to rewind it.

If you have the rope tied to the spool and threaded through the face plate of the engine cover, pull the rope out all the way and tie the end to the tiller arm so it cannot recoil.

You will have to remove the roll pin from the starter pinion. Note its position as it goes through the sleeve and upper spring retainer.

Then you will need a large screwdriver to turn the spring 18 full revolutions counterclockwise. While holding the spring, return the roll pin.

This last is difficult to do without an extra set of hands. I usually have a small nail punch along to help to align the spool and spring retainer holes to hel get the roll pin back in.

Thanks Ezeke, worked like a charm. Much appreciated diagram. The 72 Sportwin will now have its maiden re voyage this long weekend. Thanks for the expertise.
