Well, I would sort of dispute the notion that there were only two of them made. It was a special high performance motor made in 1968. Evinrude also had a version of it, the X-115, model # 115842S. See this: http://www.old-omc.de/e_1968/seite_24back.jpg

If it were a factory perfomance engine, It would be hard to say what is different. At the Johnson factory service shool They have engine's on display in the hallway out side the clss rooms. They go from the rotorary Wankel, to the V-8. On the piston engine's, the cylinder block is sand cast. They have a two throat carb on every cylinder. The only wiring is to start the engine, and shut it off. There is no neutral, or reverse. The only linkage is to the 3, 4, 6, or 8 carb's. They don't look like any engine you would see at a dealership. The V-8 with it's competition gearcase look's like it could take you for quite a boat ride. Show us some pictures with the hood off.

That engine, or powerhead look's like a stock 100 HP from the late 60's. That gearcase, exhaust housing most certainly is not. That is one beatiful boat, and set up. Where did you find, or happen to come across that. The old Merc competition engine's bring quite a sum. What would that boat, and just the gearcase off that engine bring. Is there any name, or I.D. on that boat.

What I find interesting is the shape of the gearcase. That shape was not adapted until about 68-69 in production outboards. The V-4's of that era still had the bullet shaped non through hub exhaust.

I think OMC was experimenting with the grearcase shape that would become their standard until the late 70's.

As stated, I don't think it's a "one off" but I would not want to have to find parts for it.

If you look at the far right photo, the one showing the engine from the rear. Is that a gear shift lever ? The 90-100 HP engine's built like that are electro-matic's. Does the engine have reverse gear? I'll bet Dhadley could tell us what that is. What type of steering does the rig have?

As you already know by now, it is a modified 100hp powerhead, coupled to a special lower unit and midsection. It is a race motor, pure & simple. They were pickey about who they were sold to. The boat and driver had to be approved by the factory before they would sell it to you. Then you got support from the factory race team. They didn't want any of those things out there losing races. It was all about busting Mercury's image as a "fast" motor and OMC's image as a dependable-but-slow motor. It all started with Evinrude breaking the world speed record. Hopefully, you don't need any parts for the lower unit, but if you do, good luck.

If you look on Ebay under Merc part's, it will give you some Idea what old Merc racing part's are worth. You can find them as they are still around. Not that OMC. I would have to think that is a very rare find. Go to the Scream, and Fly discusssion board. Those guys' are more into racing. They have a whole section on racing, along with old photo's.When they fight over an old 4, or 6 cylinder racing engine for for $5000+ will give you some idea. They also won't be in the condition, or have the look's of that OMC. That outfit would be fun to drive.
