Today a friend replaced the waterpump on my 1996 Johnson 88 SPL. This was preventive maintenance as the boat and motor have not been run in some time. Prior to removing and replacing the impeller, we started her up with new gas. Ran very well. Steady stream of water coming ouf of the engine, but one of the banks was running hot. He replaced both thermostats and the water pump (full kit). After reassembly the pump isn't pushing any water out.. Any suggestions on where to begin? I guess we'll need to take down the lower unit and take a look, but are there any secrets? We should have run the engine after changing the thermostats, before changing the waterpump to see if we did those correctly or if they could be causing the pump not to circulate the water.

Thanks

There are only several things that could have been done incorrectly.

1. Impeller drive key missing.

2. Water tube not aligned.

3. Thermostat's in backwards,

Check 1 and 2 by removing the hoses from the thermostat block and start it, you see flow-lots of it.

Fixed pump issue - adapter for hose came loose and was blocking the flow. Now the engine overheats witht the T-stats in. They were replacements and match what we took out. When we try with out t-stats, the engine stays cool. Any thoughts?

Got it working - had to move the cork washers to the other side of the t-stats.
