Re: 1976 johnson 115 hp v4 no spark

NO SPARK OR INTERMITTENT SPARK ON ONE OR MORE CYLINDERS:
1. Disconnect the Yellow wires from the rectifier and retest. If the engine has good spark, replace the rectifier.
2. Check the timer base resistance and DVA output (see NO SPARK ON ANY CYLINDER above).
3. Swap the timer base wire sets (swap the #1 & #3 pair with the #2 & #4 pair) and see if the no spark problem follows a timer
base wire.
4. Check the DVA output on the Orange wires from the power pack while connected to the ignition coils. You should have a
reading of at least 150V or more. If the reading is low on one cylinder, disconnect the Orange wire from the ignition coil for
that cylinder and reconnect it to a load resistor. Retest. If the reading is good, the ignition coil is likely bad. A continued low
reading indicates a bad power pack.
5. Visually inspect the ignition coils for burned or discolored areas and cracks in the casing (indicating arcing inside the coil).
6. Swap the ignition coil with one that is sparking correctly

You may need a DVA adapter. Like this:

The info is for '71 - '78 screw terminal pack motors.

The BRP Evinrude website doesn't show a 1976 115HP was made that model year. They show 115HP Johnson in 1975 and 1977.

No fire I have changed the plugs & plug wires. Any suggestions. Could it be the ignetion coil. Is it easy to test?

Re: 1976 johnson 115 hp v4 no spark

It won't fire unless it's turning 300 RPM. Test for spark with all of the plugs removed so you know that you are reaching that RPM. See the troubleshooting steps here: http://cdielectronics.com/InstallSheet/113-1731.pdf

The 1976 115 Johnson was left off the BRP list, but it definitely existed. Use the 1976 Evinrude parts catalog - everything is the same except the paint and the upper cowl.

The 1976 Johnson V4 has the newer ignition components with the black ignition coils.
