1972 Johnson 65hp Stinger?

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I recently saw an ad for a 1972 Johnson Stinger. The motor is painted red, as the Stingers usually are and it looks to be a '72 powerhead - the coils, powerpack, etc look right, plus it appears to be hydro-electric (yellow plug, no shift cable).

I didn't know that there is such a thing - I always thought the Stingers were 75hp and of a later model year.

What say you, old Johnson fans?

1972 was the first year of the 3-cylinder Stinger Mean Machine - not to be confused with the V4 Stinger GP competition motors. The Stinger horsepowers followed the lead of the standard models, starting at 65 (1972 & 1973), bumping to 70 (1974), and eventually 75 (1975 & up).

I learned something. The first "Stinger" I ever saw was a '75' I think. Bright Orange, as I recall.

There's the gospel answer.

I remember the Stinger 70 brand new in 1974, but at the end of the season in 1974 I saw a Stinger 65 at Frank's Outboard Marine in Hamilton, Ontario being laid up for winter storage. Looking back at my 1972 & 1973 reference stuff I saw nothing about a Stinger 65. I always kept it in the back of my mind but I never saw another one for the next 34 years until I saw one on e-Bay in 2008.

I recently learned that the Stinger 65 was offered in 1972 & 1973, having different shift mechanisms & steering setups between the 2 years (on the long shaft versions anyway).

Don't know about a '72 mine is a '73 65hp mounted on a 15' MFG trihull, runs like someone is after it! Got the service manual for it too!
