35 Johnson wiring harness

I belive it to be a 1973 35 hp Johnson outboard with the long shaft. The internal wiring harness is breaking down badly with much of the wiring insulation brittle. I've patched and replaced many of the wires but am concerned about it failing anyway.

What wiring harnesses will fit? Are the harnesses somewhat universal with the Johnson / Evinrudes during this era? Will a 3 or 4 cylinder harness work (obviously not using the extra wires) or must I find a 2 cylinder harness?

Would a harness from a 28 HP Johnson model no J28ESLCUC ser # E6257574 work?

Thanks in advance.

From your site, it appears the 28 hp is a 1987 and the "cable assembly" is shown as part# 0582524. No "cable assembly" shown on the 1982?

Any ideas if it will fit?

I just had to get one for an 1987 70hp and had to do a lot of looknig; they are not universal and they are expensive. Lots of places on the web have them but I think they all come from OMC.
