have a newer lower unit- has the exhaust housing window w/ shift rod connector. i want to install this unit on my '79 motor. drive shaft and water tube are correct but i need to swap old shift rod into newer unit.

will my old rod thread into the new unit ?

how 'deep' a dissasembly would it take to do this?

would it be easier to modify the new shift rod to make the old style [in the exhaust housing]connection first and then make the connection in the lower unit as i fit the lower unit onto motor?

any advice appreciated- i am 3+ hours from any marine shop....
thanks

the seloc manual only shows this as part of complete teardown- the rods both thread into the shift yoke- i just don;t know if thats something i can do w/o tearing into gearcase

bumping this up because still no advice.....

any one modify a newer shift rod to an old style ? i am thinking i can make sure shifter is in neutral- then, install old shift rod [only] onto the connecting bolt. Mark the shift rod so i can measure from bottom of exhaust casing to top of old rod. Use that dimension to cut and grind new rod to make that correct length with new gear case free spinning [in neutral]. any thoughts?
