I recently purchased an 1989 88hp Evinrude outboard. Does this engine require a fuel to gas mixture? If so, what is the recommended ratio?

The 88's did not have VRO (sort of auto oiling) You need to mix well, 50 parts gasoline to 1 part of approved outboard oil. If the engine has not been run in many months, I like to start it on 24 to 1 for a couple of gallons to lube everything up. If you are not familiar with your engine, you really should get an owner's manual and if you intend to do your own service, a factory service manual. Not aftermarket!!!

this may help a bit...it's "down to the math" of it

50:1 mixture

GAS OIL
1 gallon : 2.56 ounces
2 gallon : 5.1 ounces
3 gallon : 7.7 ounces
4 gallon : 10.2 ounces
5 gallon : 12.8 ounces
6 gallon : 15.4 ounces

GAS OIL
1 gallon : 2.56 ounces
2 gallon : 5.1 ounces
3 gallon : 7.7 ounces
4 gallon : 10.2 ounces
5 gallon : 12.8 ounces
6 gallon : 15.4 ounces

That should be quallified by saying they are US gallons.
(US gallons are smaller than real, genuine, original UK gallons :D )

For practical purposes 50:1 is near enough 1 pint in 6 gallons, 1/2 pint in 3 gallons ... US or UK

Right you are Vic, completely forgot about the US, UK gallons thing...I'm in Canada and run on Litres and Ml. When I fill up with 25 litres, I dump in 500ml of oil (1pint~=500ml)

And of course we use litres and ml (or cm?) in the UK now. Fuel is all sold by the litre and oil comes in 1 litre bottles too.

I keep a plastic laboratory measure handy for measuring small volumes of oil for the garden machinery and the small outboards. see below

Beer, though, is sold by the pint and a UK pint is bigger than a US pint :)
