I just bought a Johnson Seahorse 10hp motor. It's a 1954. The gas oil mix is stamped on the motor and doesn't look correct. It says 1 pint oil to 1 gallon gas or 1 quart oil to 5 gallons of gas. Can someone set me straight?

Re: Johnson Seahorse gas/oil mix

That was right back in 1954. Can remember adding one quart of Gulf non detergent 20w oil to five imperial gallons. Our motors were mostly on small fishing boats and less than 15 hp so a little light on the oil never seemed to hurt them. Probably 80% of the time they were used trolling. Any reader out there who remembers where they were on VJ-day always had at least two, sometimes more, clean spark plugs in their tackle box.

Many of those older engines did not have roller bearings and 2-cycle oil technology was not what it is today. Any of you graybeards remember some of the concoctions used for racing two cycles. Caster oil, alcohol, and who know what else.

Some of our johnnyrude experts here can tell you much better what mixture you should run in this motor today.

If you followed the link, you would find that 20:1 is what BRP/Evinrude is recommending today for that motor.
