I have a 1995 Crest 25' Pontoon with a 1995 Evinrude 88

This boat is using alot of gas. I'm currently getting about 2 miles to the gallon.

I did a compression check and I get 90psi on 2 cylinders 95psi on 1 and 100psi on the other.

My prop is a 14x17

My tach goes haywire so I have no idea about rpms

Does anyone know if this fuel consumption is good or bad. It's really eating into my pocket book..

2 miles per gallon sounds about right to me. you really need to at least borrow a tach, your motor should be turning at least 5500 RPMs at WOT or your prop is the wrong pitch. I think most large pontoon boats have about a 13 pitch. I had a 28 footer with a 100 HP and a 13 pitch prop hit around 5500 RPMs. you can figure adding about 200 RPMs per pitch drop. I prefer 5500 to 5800 rpm at WOT. the right size prop will give your boat better performance and make your motor last longer and help with fuel mileage. does the boat have the large pontoons or the smaller ones, how much weight/drag do you have going on. Also want to make sure you got no water in the pontoons.

Sparkie has some excellent comments. In addition, make sure the engine is not mounted too low on the transom. You can really lose performance and economy if mounted too low. Engines that are mounted too low cause excessive lower unit drag and excess water spray. At speed, the water flowing under the boat's engine pod should run just under the engine's anti-ventilation plate just above the prop.

Thank you both for the replies. I have a 13 pitch prop that I'm going to put on. I will also put a new tach on and check to see if the engine mounted too low.

I will post the results..

average fuel comsumption of an 88 spl is 9 gallons per hour at wide open throttle. boats are measured in gallons per hour, not miles per gallon.

yes TD, I think the rule of thumb is 1 gallon per hour per 10 HP.

his boat probably does about 20 MPH at WOT, that would be a little more than 2 miles per gallon at 9 gallons per hour. I think my math is right
