I have a 1976 Johnson 40 hp, I didn't realize it at the time, but the lower unit had water in it and it froze this winter. I lowered the motor yesterday and oil started leaking out of vent or weep hole on the oposite side of the fill hole. There is no apparent damage to the case. The local boat shop can't get it in for atleast a week, and I am just wondering what mite have failed?

Shift rod seal, driveshaft seal?
I guess thats why we always change the oil at the end of the season,
when I bought my 150hp it had water in the gear oil but nothing was damaged.
I believe we're supposed to store them tilted down not up.

You ought to consider buying the factory service book, even if you don't work on it yourself.
