Hey Guys, just aquired a 13' whaler with a 1990 Johnson 40 HP. Just to be safe, wanted to check the water pump/ impellar. I've replaced plenty of Yamaha impellars, but this is the first Johnson.
So, as far as I can tell, I have to disconnect the shift linkage behind the lower carb. I've removed the starter and have access from the left side to the 3/8" bolt and have a 1/4" ratchet with the right extension to get on it.
My question is, how will i allign this when putting the LU back up? Is it as tricky as it looks?
thanks in advance

Re: Project boat

You should not have to remove that bolt, on the stbd side of the motor there is a small hitch pin, pull it out, then push shift lever to port clevis will then separate, unhooking the shift rod.

Hey Sea Legs, I think I gave you the wrong information on the shift disconnect. Look on www.shopevinrude.com, parts catalogue. It will show you the correct diagram. The one I was looking at was for an earlier model. so sorry.
