Re: 1972 18 horse eletctric start

you need to look for the starter and bracket on ebay. There are 2 similar brackets that sellers get mixed up. The bracket with the built-in solenoid mount is for the 78+ 25 and 35 hp motors. The one you will need just has a straight edge and fits 56-77' 15 (56' only)-18-20-25 Hp motors. You will also need the solenoid and solenoid bracket that mounts near the shift arm, and a mommentary on/off switch to activate the solenoid. You should make your own wiring harness to save money. The entire kit is available at shop2.evinrude.com for $500, but you can make out with everything you need on ebay for less than $200.

Part number 171845 Electric starting kit, push a button on the motor to start. Available from any Evinrude dealer. Only $493.37. If you want to start and choke it from up front in the boat, add a 172401 remote kit. I don't have the price on that one.

Full instructions come with the kits.

Still interested???

IMO it's not worth it to get a new kit. I got the starter and bracket on ebay for less than $100, the solenoid bracket for $15, and i already had the keyswitch and solenoid from a dust-collecting 74' 40hp Johnson. I made a wiring harness using a 4-prong trailer connector replacement set

punch these item numbers into ebay...

120531127884 This is the one that fits your motor. It has that flat angle.

130367994891 This doesn't. It has the solenoid mount. You can see where the solenoid is, pay attention to this area.

260555775522 Here's the bracket that doesn't fit. another difference is at the top. It has a tab. The one you want doesn't have a tab like this.

As for wiring, + battery cable goes to solenoid, - cable is grounded, usually with the screw on the starter bracket, a lead going from solenoid to bottom of starter, and two wires at the top of the solenoid going to a mommentary on/off switch

you may also need the flywheel gear. It's part of the electric start kit, so i'm not sure your motor's flywheel has it.
