Re: 88 HP Johnson

Any way of finding out the dealer that sold the boat and looking up records, IE: sn of the motor matches the bill of sale? A pic won't lead to a definite answer, it's a paper trail type answer. Good yes, maintenance records make it better.

it would help if we knew the year or the model # of the motor. all we know is it has an 88 cover on it.

Posting the accurate model and serial number would allow a year identification of the engine. If it is the same as the boat, it could be original. I think 88's were a good reliable stripped model, no oil injection, often no tilt, but the basic engine is solid.

Likely the engine is original to the boat. Once you check the model number of the engine, you will know the year. OMC did make an 88 in both the 94 and 95 model years-it could be either, depending on what the dealer or factory put on the boat when new. A 95 model will include the letters "EO" in the model, a 94 will include "ER". It's a solid engine that makes good torque.
