Whats the best way to do your own tune-up on an engine? I have a 1984 Evinrude 35hp 2 cycle outboard. Want to give it a tune-up this winter for the spring. It garage kept so im not worried about the weather harming it. If anyone has a link to a step process that would be great! Thanks to all!

Re: Tune-ups?

Get the factory service manual, don't fall for the clymer or seloc books, get the real one. Paid $48 for mine, saved $1000 so far on mechanic bills.

Have a good read and make a list, you'll need some tools to remove the flywheel if the points and coils are on the list
and a torque wrench to install the flywheel nut again.
Other than that its very simple.
I would do all the elec consumables such as plugs ,wires , points etc.
Rebuild carb/s with new carb kits.
Change out gear oil, use new seals.
Remove prop, clean prop shaft, lube and reinstall with stainless cotter pin.
Just follow the manual, it shows what to do every 12 months.

Re: Tune-ups?

The service manual for mine is $120. I might as well take it to the shop and get a tune-up. Any other suggestions that aren't so pricy!
