6 hp lower unit interchangeability

I recently bought a really nice 1977 6 hp short shaft Johnson. It is in pristine condition with one exception: the previous owner drilled four 3/8" holes in the anti-cavitation plate. I see a 1978 lower unit for sale and would like to know if they are interchangeable. Is there an easier repair than changing lower units? Thanks for your help.

sounds like someone put a whale tail on the cav plate. the holes may not hurt anything. you could try to J B weld the holes, then sand down smooth if you want it to look good. On the other hand it might be nice to have a spare lower unit.

If it were me I would find someone that can mig or tig weld those holes shut... should'nt cost much and would'nt take very long to weld.
