motor smokes/loses power

I Need Help! I Have A 1973 Johnson 85hp.when Motor Runs For About 20 Minutes ,the Alarm In The Control Box Goes Off, And The Motor Begins To Smoke. Is That The Choke Alarm Or A Temperature Alarm ? Motor Seems To Be Hot When This Happens.when I Run The Motor Out Of Water With The Ears On It Just Spits Water Out The 2 Upper Ports,is This Normal ? Is This A Choke Issue Or A Water Pump Or Thermostat Issue ? Thank You Very Much..mike

Change the impeller and youll probably get rid of the alarm, and the overheat.

And yes its normal.
