what happens when you loose a coil pack on one of your cylinders? we were in the Alsea bay crabbing and lost all power and the motor died. when it died it just stopped not gradually (like it seized up), it started up again just fine but had a misfire. the first 2 days there was no problem, we pulled each of the plug wires to see if one cylinder wasn't firing and it didn't seem to make any difference.

When it died were you idling or under power?

we pulled each of the plug wires to see if one cylinder wasn't firing and it didn't seem to make any difference

Do you mean, there was the same rpm drop regardless of which wire you pulled?

Is it still running rough?

get a spark gap tester..should be a thick blue spark at 1/2 gap. this will tell you if you have a weak/bad coil. also check your plugs. also check fuel lines/filters.

Re: not quite right rude 130 1996

so the reason i think that i have a bad spark issue is that i was putting on the cover while it was running and touched the back lever lock and got shocked... after that i pulled off the plug wires and yadayadayada.
i also checked the fuel and filters which seemed fine.
so i am at a loss, i have not tested the spark at a 1/2 in gap... will soon.
thanks

A weak coil will not cause it to die under power. Sounds like you have a short somewhere, since you shocked yourself that would be a good indication something aint right. May try running it with the cowling off. Sounds more like you may have fried a pack than a coil.

Re: not quite right rude 130 1996

could it be an electronic safety option that shut down the engine...
that's the only thing that i can figure
all three new spark plugs are clean ant the upper R side plug is totally crapped with black carbon so that cylinder is not firing.
a bad coil pack?

Replace the powerpack and don't pull plug wires on a running 130 - you can blow the powerpack.

Use an inductive timing light, it's safer.

we pulled them and then started it... each time. so you think that it's the power pack?

You need to run a compression check. Is your overheat alarm in working condition?

Check it with an inductive timing light through the RPM range, one wire at a time.
