About 6 weeks ago I purchased a 1974 Johnson 9.9 hp and after
installing a new fuel pump it runs like new. Thought I would put
a new coat of paint on this little jewel to make it look like new.
Note: I changed to deacal and color to that of 1983 9.9hp as
I think they look much better than the original 1974.

Nice job, did you pull the water pump to check it? I just finished my 1983 9.9 , didn't do the cowl as I'm waiting to find the exact decal set. It's too bad the stock decals are almost impossible to find, you lose the idle speed adjustment decals and the shift decals, otherwise these motors are easy to work on and make look like new.

I got the decals from shabestari on ebay. I paid $15 for the decal set
for my motor. He can make you up decals for any motor at great
price.

I don't know if the 83 ones he sold you are identical to factory, here is my motor with original decals.

That looks like a long shaft version. I found a color photo of 1983 Johnson
9.9 in Johnson repair manual and I had the decal made to match the
photo. My motor is short shaft version, perhaps the decals for long
shaft were different.

Is that an old photo? If not how did you keep the motor in such
good shape?

And you wanted a rear view as well in another post, I guess it's too late but this is it.

It is an extra long shaft (10") , I converted it with all the parts needed from an SEL Sail Master ;). Decals are all stock, I managed to save the motor ones. It's a 1 week old photo, I did like you did, completely repainted the entire motor, powerhead too.

Your motor looks really nice. As mentioned, the decals aren't exactly like original--although your decals look a lot better than original to me. I never liked the '83 decals much.
Enjoy your motor,

Here is another one I did, it was a 75, decals were not factory but the paint was.

I got in contact with the gent on ebay, he's going to make them for me based on measurements and photos I'm going to send him, thanks Sharboat for the info, I'm going to use him for my 90hp as well.

Bk,
I like your evinrude's decals a lot. You do nice work. I think I'll check into those decals from that fellow, too. I need some made up for an '84 merc 25xd.
Later,

Thanks a lot, I take pride in restoring these motors, i'm kinda obsessed with them, the wife think's im crazy plus the last one I did needed a complete powerhead rebuild which was great education.

He told me to take straight pics to the best scale with some measurements, his direct contact info is Dave Shabestari [david@shabestari.com].

Cheers

Re: Johnson 9.9 hp restoration!

You can get the paint for the 1974 Johnson from your local BRP/OMC /Johnson/Evinrude dealer. I just got a couple cans in BRP packaging to re-paint my 1975, it's a metallic olive green they call "gold". At $9.00 a can, it's a deal and much better than paying $25-$35.00 a can for custom mixed paint, which does not seem to be as durable as what the OEM paint by BRP makes.

Here is a link for a complete set for a 1980 9.9, including the lower cover latch, and slow speed and shift decals:

Here is another set for a 1974:

I neverer cared for the white or grey Johnsons of the 1980s because they show dirt, grease and oil so easily and always look dirty because of that. They look great however when clean. Nice restoration. Did yours have the old style metal pump housing?

Re: Johnson 9.9 hp restoration!

Dave does good work and he's cheap. The paint I used was OMC and the weatherstripping was original.

This was the 9.9 after Dave sent me the decals he custom made based on my order:

The best compliment you can receive is to be copied, and that?s what I intend to do.
Your motor looks terrific.

How were you able to remove all the grease and oil before painting it?
