I have a 1989 60 VRO. I have all of the bolts removed needed to lift powerhead up and the powerhead will lift up and move alittle left and right. I don't understand how to dis-engage the shift linkage rod ..... the manual says to pull the shift rod clip & push rod into the powerhead ..... I do this but it doesn't seem to release anything ... I do not want to lift the powerhead up until I know I have this released correctly .... I don't see any bolts or clips that I can remove up under the carb area .... any help would be great !!!!! Thanks ... Doc

I know this is an old thread but I just did this procedure on my 96 evinrude 70hp last night.

It does in fact work to remove the clip and push the rod towards the powerhead. You need to push the rod right in then wiggle the shift linkage back and forth. Mine separated after a few tries.
