1973 Johnson 85 HP OB Fuel Mixture

Can someone direct me to a manual or website where I can determine the proper fuel mixture for this motor? I keep hearing 50:1. I was told by the previous owner that 24:1 was the right number but the engine smokes way too bad for that to be correct.

50:1 is the correct mixture.

Thank you for your reply. This site seems very credible and the responses very professional. Is there a source manual accessible from Johnson that answers these types of questions.

50:1 after 1964 and welcome to the forum...

Twice the oil !!! Hardly surprising it was a little smokey !!!
50 to 1 it is. TCW-3 rated oil.

if that motor has indeed been using 24:1 mix id also do a decarb after changing to 50:1.

Great motor. We awoke ours from a long layup 5 years ago and had to dump some money into it to get it going but it's been reliable ever since and has not been back to the shop.
