1992 175 HP Johnson losing power when given heavier throttle

We've run the engine on an external tank to take the fuel restriction at the tank/line out of the equation.

Boat runs fine in neutral, can run up and down for whatever periods. As soon as we push in forward and give it the throttle, it drops to a lower idle, than sometimes shuts down. When given a period of rest, it starts up fine and then allows us to give it a small amount of RPM's to limp in on. Mechanic is flabbergasted.

This started out as intermittent issue, but now seems to be consistent.

ANY ideas here would be appreciated.

Thanks

Possible fuel pump issue (i.e. leaking diaphragm, etc.). Try putting a pressure gauge on pump outlet and run it until issue surfaces. You can also try activating the primer/choke when the motor slow to confirm fuel starvation (pumping the primer bulb tells the same, but less conveniently).

BTW, running in neutral doesn't tell much, other than it will start and run. Beyond that, not much.

any kind of a tuneup done lately? did the mechanic do anything to it?

have you tried to pumpo the primer bulb while giving throttle/gas???

Thanks, I will try the gauge when while running.

To the other poster, yes, we've tried pumping the ball, to no avail.

We've had a mechanic pretty much owning the fitness of the engine for four years, since he's took over this is the first issue we've had.

what rpms the motor boggs down? take it slowly up to speed
