Electric ignition.
The purple from the motor and the purple from the key switch are not connected.
The ground to the kill switch from the key switch is not connected.
The kill switch has two black with green stripe not connected.
All other wire are connected to the key switch. I can hear the electric choke activate.
Where does the purple, cut in half wire, re-connect to at the key switch? and where does the ground from the key switch go to? How do the black with green stripe on the kill switch come in to play?

Purple wire attaches to "A" terminal of key switch.

Wire from Raised "M" terminal of key switch connects to one wire of kill switch. Other wire of kill switch connects to ground.

Other Regular "M" terminal of key switch connects to ground.

Kill switch function: Lanyard ON = wires are not connected internally (ignition engaged).

Lanyard pulled OFF = wires are connected, effectively connecting the Raised "M" (ignition) terminal to ground thru the kill switch, disengages ignition.

You tried that and still nothing?? It would help if you stated in detail just what problem you're having.

No matter which way we hook it up with the wires it will not make the starter engage. We can jump it off the battery directly to the starter and it turns over then. But there is nothing when the key is turned. We have it wired now to your directions. Thanks for the help. The PO had just jumped it off the battery, he couldn't get it to work either!

Re: Key switch wiring 1988 Johnson 28 hp

A fused 12 volt lead (Usually RED or GREEN) runs from the battery terminal of the starter solenoid to the "B" terminal of the ignition switch.

A white wire runs from the "S" terminal of the igniton switch to a neutral cutout safety switch within the control box. This safety switch prevents having the engine start when in gear. The other wire of the safety switch leads to one of the 3/8" hex nut terminals of the starter solenoid.

A black wire runs from the other 3/8" nut terminal of the starter solenoid to ground anywhere on the powerhead.

Now, when you turn the key to the start position, 12 volts should run from ther "B" terminal of the igniiton switch to the safety switch, thru that safety switch to the "S" terminal of the ignition switch, then to the 3/8" nut terminal of the solenoid, effectively causing the solenoid to click in and engage the electric starter.

If the solenoid does not click in, jiggle the throttle handle somewhat. If that closes the circuit and the solenoid arrempts to engage, that safety switch is out of adjustment and needs to be set closer to the cam that actuates it.

Let me know how you make out.
