Difference between 48 SPL & a 40 HP Johnson

I have a '94 48 SPL and an '89 40 HP both Johnson outboards. Everything seems to be identical on the two motors, even the specs. What is the difference between a 40 HP and a 48 SPL, does anybody know?

You would need to get a parts breakdown for each and compare each part number to tell what was different. What you can see from the outside would make little difference in power output.

the difference in a 48 spl and 50 hp is basically the fuel pump.
