I just purchased a boat which has a 1969 evinrude 40hp (40972R). The ignition is broken and I want to test if the motor even turns over as a first step.

Does anybody know the wire's that need to be crossed to activate acc and which need to be crossed to turn over the starter? The bottom of the ignition is still intact and I can see the "S" "M" letters etc if that helps.

Also I have hooked up only a utility batter (235 amp 12v) is that enough to get the starter to turn over?

Any help would be appreciated rather than simply connecting wires at random!

cheers.

yep.. running a heavy gauge wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the positive on the starter motor will crank it over...
