Throttle Cable Retaining Clip

I bought a side-mount single-engine remote control that I am hooking up to an '86 8hp Evinrude. No instructions were provided and I have one part I don't know what to do with. I think it is part# 0123140 Retainer Clip.

Its about 1" long - stainless steel spring metal - with two ears with holes on one end and spring fingers on the other. It looks like it is supposed to be mounted on a pin and then swings to snap on to something.

Any ideas on where it goes? Thanks

It goes on the end of the throttle cable that connects to the throttle linkage on the motor.

The holes connect to the throttle cable and the clip keeps the cable from slipping off the motor.

Re: Throttle Cable Retaining Clip

Thanks to all for the quick responses. I'm wondering if I need to use this clip on my cable? The conversion kit provides knurled locking pins on each cable connector that I push in and turn to lock the cables - on both the throttle linkage and the shift lever. The pin on the throttle end seems to be in the position where the retaining clip would attach. Also, the clip doesn't seem to have the same shape as the end of the plastic connector. It doesn't look like it would fit and snap on if it were installed.

Does this sound right?

The clip should be larger than the end of the throttle cable. The cable should slip on a pin on the throttle lever and the clip wraps around both. Use it or it may come off while running.

Re: Throttle Cable Retaining Clip

I'm stumped.

Tashasdaddy,

I found your instructions from another post.

3. on the motor end of the cable, is a trunion nut (adjustment nut) there is a retainer, on the motor for the trunion nut remove the clip.

Does the clip go over the trunion nut somehow?

Re: Throttle Cable Retaining Clip

I'm feeling pretty stupid here. I just can't figure out where the darn clip goes or what it clips to. When I take the thick sleeve with the locking pin off the end of the cable, and look just at the raw cable-end, there are two horns that the retaining clip fits perfectly on. But that won't attach to the throttle arm. It needs the sleeve/locking pin.

Also, with just the cable-end and the clip attached, it is too long to attach to the throttle lever no matter how much I might shorten it up with the trunion nut. And I don't have whatever pin goes through the cable-end into the throttle arm that the clip would clip over.

I assume that the bottom cable is attached to the engine the same way as the top cable. The clip is used in situations where the cable end has a hole and you slide the hole over a pin. You then place the holes in the clip on both sides of the pin and snap the clip onto the cable. If you want to see a picture, I can go take one. You usually see this when you change a tiller handle to remote controls.

If you can, a picture would help a lot! I have changed from tiller to remote control. I am thinking that, in my case, the retaining clip is not used.

If you look at the pics I posted (here and above), you can see how both cables attach to the motor. Each cable slips into a "connector" which is a thick sleeve with a locking pin, held on with its own pin . The locking pin attaches to either the throttle lever or shift lever.

You have the clip on right. Here is a couple of pics from my 1979 Johnson 6hp.
