evinrude spitfire 175 hp cracked block

My son has a 1991 evinrude spitfire 175 outboard that has a cracked block. This is the third year he has owned it and was wondering what caused it. Took it out first trip this year, was running rough and then quit, took off cover and there were chunks of metal laying in the bottom. We have heard that they do not freeze since all the water goes out the bottom, what else could it be? Something he did not do after winter storage? Problem with the Stabil that was added? Any ideas?

it may have thrown a connecting rod, if one of the carbs was gummed up which seized a piston ? all it takes is a dirty carb.

heres a parts engine for short money, don't know if the yrs match for you, its near Boston.
