1982 90 hp v-4 voltage regulator

    I was wondering how the Vregulator works; it is connected to stator (yellow cableq minus and I couldn't trace the purple cable - most ptobably to ignition key, could regulator cause damage to stator, and how can I check it without engine runung?

    The voltage rectifier is a system of diodes allowing voltage to run in only one direction, away from the stator. It converts ac to dc by blocking the alternate flow.

    If damaged, the diodes' wires may fuse and allow battery voltage to reach the ignition system and cause damage, especially to the stator.

    There are tests for regulated and unregulated rectifiers in the Engine FAQ forum, but the bottom line is that if you think the rectifier is not good, disconnect it - you don't need it to run the motor.

    The tachometer gets positive and negative (black and purple wires) from the ignition switch and the signal comes from the terminal block on the engine through the gray wire:

      On my motor the rectefier is a separate unit from the regulator, rectifier is ok, I doubt the regulator.
      If I can see an engine wiring diagram.
      The rectifier is connected two yellow to stator and minus to body and red to fuse.
      The regulator is connected black - minus, 1 yellow to stator and one purple which goes in wiring harness and I can't trace,
      I want to check regulator.
      Will tacho work connected to 1 lead of stator, with rectifier and regulator disconnected?

        Tach will work with the regulator disconnected but the rectifier must be connected and working properly.

        Voltage readings at the battery will vary if the regulator is on or off - use 1500 RPM +/-.

          I didn't have readings with a blown stator I guess and want to check up regulator before burning the new stator.
          How can I do it and how does the regulator work?
