I don't know your motor but are you sure it is only 4 bolts ???
Did you unhook the shift linkage ???
Does it move down at all ???

Looks like there is at least one more bolt ... #97 ... #99 ... one might be under the trim tab!

Also, once you get the lower unit loose, you'll also need to disconnect the shift rod!

No i did not remove the shift rod. I am looking at the shift rod and appears there is no way to remove it unless i remove the carbs. There is a connecting rod offset of the main rod going straight down to the lower unit im assuming. is this the one im suppose to loosen or take the carbs off. Thanks

Thanks for the pic. Mine has only one of those bolts and I have already removed it.

Was that the 5th bolt ... or one of the original 4?

It's hard to tell from the diagrams, but you may indeed have to remove the carbs to get to the upper end of the shift rod. Obviously, you're going to have to disconnect the shift rod in order to drop the gear case.

I'm guessing from your questions that you don't have a factory service manual ... they're not very expensive, and very good (much better than Yamaha, Mercury, etc.)!

Is it ok to take a block of wood and tap on top of the fin on the gear case or try to take a screw drive a nd drive between the to to try and seperate. Im not sure how strong those fins are. Thanks

Perhaps the lower engine shroud that the cover sits on separates and comes off. This may give you good access to the area under the carbs. I had a 1973 85 hp Evinrude in the late 1970 's and I changed the water pump on it and I don't remember having to take the carbs off to disconnect the shift rod but to be honest that was so long ago I don't remember the exact procedure any longer. I know it was a very good motor that idled very well and ran well. I had very little trouble with that motor. Best of luck.

It appears as if it is #99. I do have a manual. The photo I have of the shift linkage is hard to see. I downloaded the manual and It doesnt say anything about removing the carbs. Alls it says is remove shift rod reteining screw. Thanks

After reading the your post and the manual again. I have decided that the carbs did not need to come off. So that left just two screws to come loose and what do you know that was what i needed to do and now the shifter linkage is seperated from the rod. Now how do i get the two to seperate. Thanks again for you alls help.

BankerJohn, After tapping slightly on the lower unit. I thought I better lay down on the floor and look for any other bolts. It appears that i must have removed #97 and the one i told you i removed #99 is inside the trim tab cavity. I will remove it and see what happens Thanks

So far so good then.
What did you use to undo the shift linkage ???
Just interested. I have to get an elaborate set up of 1/4" drive knuckles and extensions to get in. If not it is off with the carbs.
You will need a helper when you re-assemble.

Re: changing water pump on 1973 85hp evinrude

there is a mid pivit point that had a srew in it. Once i removed the screw there was two halve that kind sandwinched to the shift rod itself. One side had a pin through it and it slid through the shift rod into the other side and when I go to put the bolt back in the pivit point and tighten it. It will hold the two together. I hope I explained that well enough. I will try to load a pic for you.

Re: changing water pump on 1973 85hp evinrude

ok i am installing new water pump now and well i forgot witch way the fins on the rubber propeller should be going. looking down on the unit, should the pump turn clock wise or counter? The second question is when i was lowering the gear case a o ring fell out and am not sure where its home is. I receive a new one in the kit I bought but am still unsure. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks
PS to KENMYFAM here are the pics. It took me a while to figure out how to attach them.

Turn the drive shaft clockwise as you push down on the housing.

Thanks guys, What a big help. Im still not sure about the o ring. Do you have any Idea. Im thinking It may slide down the drive shaft and stop at the end of the splins after I have everything together and ready to slid the gear case back on. But not sure. It came out on the floor when I removed the gear case.

From what I can see it goes on after the water tube grommet and is item 86 in the diagram.
Thanks for the photos. Going to be fun getting that back in place eh !!
