I am in the process of rewiring a 1977 Evinrude 140 that has very few of its old wires intact.
There's a voltage regulator bolted to the back of the motor, that's not shown in the wiring diagram?
Its got a ground wire, a red wire, and one yellow wire.
I can see that the yellow wire, (has an inline fuse), went to the yellow/gray wire coming from the stator, but the red wire wasn't hooked up?
I am thinking that this needs to go to terminal 8, for battery power?

Is this correct?
Why do some of these have VRs and some don't? I've got 12 other V4 motors here, two others are 1977s, and this is the only one with a VR.

All of the original wires were rotted off, I bought a new red plug harness, new control harness, and have replaced all four coils, the VR, and the rectifier, all of which had bad wires, they were rotted to the point that they fell apart upon being touched. Only the wires coming from the stator were still intact.

Was the VR an add on kit? On this motor it bolts to a flat aluminum bracket between the cylinder heads.
